More Library Concerns

Deirdre Hearn–Wellesley Townsman, March 10, 2016

“Library trustees in the vast majority of Massachusetts towns hire and manage the library director, not the town manager…..The TGSC never reported this fact to Town Meeting, and they acknowledged, upon questioning, that they never even discussed this issue in all their interviews with other town managers.

I am concerned that the proposed change of government will have an unintended impact on the Wellesley Free Library. Our library is one of Wellesley’s crown jewels. It is supervised by an extraordinarily knowledgeable citizen board. Under its leadership, the library has flourished. It provides services and a depth of offerings found in few other libraries. The Special Act will transfer the library trustees’ authority to hire and supervise the library director as well as ultimate budget authority to a town manager, who will see the library as just one of 19 departments to manage.

Library trustees in the vast majority of Massachusetts towns hire and manage the library director, not the town manager. These towns include Weston, Belmont, Dover, Lincoln, Sherborn, Dedham, Brookline, Natick and Wayland. The TGSC never reported this fact to Town Meeting, and they acknowledged, upon questioning, that they never even discussed this issue in all their interviews with other town managers. There is a lot at stake here and no case has been made for this change. Please join me in voting No on March 15.
